After an extremely disappointing 4-8 campaign in 2008, Jon Heacock's Penguins will look to compete, or dare I say win, against the heavily favored Pittsburgh Panthers. The Penguins will be led on offense by Senior QB Brandon Summers, a Toledo transfer that went 3/5 for 14 yards in a 2006 [45-3] loss to the Panthers while he was a Rocket. Last season, Summers was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Year. He will look to his running backs, Kevin Smith, Dana Brown, and Jabari Scott, to find a way to run on the stout Panther defense. When throwing the ball, Summers will look to team captain Donald Jones, Dionte Snow, and Dominique Barnes to make some big receptions to allow the Penguins to sustain some drives.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Penguins will be led by the teams other captain, DT Mychal Savage, who is back after suffering a season ending injury at Ohio State last season. At the LB position, look for Na'eem Outler and Youngstown Cardinal Mooney product Taylor Hill to be on many tackles. It is also worth noting that YSU Head Coach has taken the reigns of Defensive Coordinator this season. The last time he was the Penguins Defensive Coordinator was in the Glory Days of the Penguins program under Jim Tressel in the 1990s. The Penguins defense must be able to stop the Pitt running game and keep the Pitt passing game in check if they are serious about winning.
Keys to a Penguin Upset:
1. Turnover's: The Penguins can ill-afford to give up the football. Ball security is a must if the Penguins want to sustain some decent drives.
2. Running Game: The Penguins have always been, and will always be, at their best when they can run the ball down teams throats, which wears down the opposition's defense. The Penguin backfield must be successful if the Penguins look to win.
3. Luck: Let's face it, the Panthers are a better team with more speed and strength. However, on any given Saturday anything can happen. If the Penguins look to upset the Panthers, they will need luck on their side. A missed Pitt FG here and an arrant throw their could pay big dividends for the Penguins in the end.
Prediction: Although this Penguins team has the right athletes and depth at most positions to compete, and perhaps pull an upset, I believe the Pitt Panthers will come out on top in the end. If the Penguins do everything right above and do get some luck, who knows they could pull an Appalachian State on Pittsburgh, but I am can only hope that happens.
You never know though, Bowling Green of the MAC upset the Panthers in their opener last season...
Pittsburgh: 31
Youngstown State: 17
The Penguins are in this thing until the 4th quarter, but the Panthers get a 4th quarter TD to seal the deal.
