This November, I strongly urge my fellow Ohioans to vote NO on Ohio Issue 3, an Amendment to the Ohio Constitution granting Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Toledo the ability to build a single casino in each city. I am strongly in favor of casino gambling, but I will not support a piece of legislation like this that will not create jobs in the Mahoning Valley.
Supporters of Issue 3 can go on and on about how this area will receive $11 million annually in casino revenues, but these supporters fail to realize this Amendment will make it nearly impossible for a casino to ever be built right here in the Mahoning Valley! I don't know about you, but I'd love to see a casino built in downtown Youngstown sometime in my lifetime.
If the casino supporters truly want to pass a piece of legislation that a MAJORITY of Ohioans will pass, then they need to make casino gambling legal in the ENTIRE state, not just the four largest cities. The reason these ballot measures continue to fail is because they are granting a handful of locations the ability to build casinos, NOT the entire State, which is wrong.
I know we will hear the casino people say they included Youngstown in the Cleveland 'market', but that is one long 75 minute drive for anyone in the Mahoning Valley interested in working there. The bottom line is this: a Cleveland area contractor will most likely build this casino and Cleveland area residents will work there, NOT Youngstown residents!
My opposition to Issue 3 may be a bit different from the anti-gambling crowd, but the bottom line is it is in the best interest of all Ohioans to defeat this bill in it's tracks. The Mahoning County Republican and Democratic Parties have come out AGAINST Issue 3, and you should as well!
PS: Don't buy the Vindicator story about the state overwhelmingly supporting Issue 3. Almost every poll out had the casino gambling measure passing by double digits in 2008, a measure I supported. That measure was defeated by 20%+ of the vote. Why can't we just legalize gambling for the entire state?!
The days of Youngstown being ignored are over!. Vote NO on Issue 3!
