From the Diocesan Press Release: Bishop George Murry, S.J., of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown has voiced his opposition to Congressman Tim Ryan’s bill, Preventing Unintended Pregnancies, Reducing the Need for Abortion and Supporting Parents Act (H.R. 3312). “This act is based on the mistaken belief that greater access to contraception reduces abortions and, in addition, some contraceptives may have an abortifacient effect,” said Bishop Murry. “Numerous studies as well as life experiences have shown that taxpayer support of contraception does not reduce unintended pregnancies and abortions. For example, a 2006 study by the Alan Guttmacher Institute presents evidence that those States which are aggressive in promoting contraception also have the highest abortion rates.”
As a Roman Catholic, I strongly commend and am encouraged by the vocal response by my Bishop as he stands up to Congressmen Tim Ryan (D), a Catholic in the Youngstown Diocese. Tim Ryan can try all he wants to dance around the bush on this issue to please his buddy and fellow Catholic Nancy Pelosi (D), but for once the Catholic Church is speaking out against his policies and proposals on abortion.
In my eyes, all Catholics should be strongly against abortion and strongly in favor of tax incentives to make adoptions easier and less costly in the United States. Although I do believe abortions should be banned in the United States, with the exception the most extreme cases, I also realize that a ban on abortions will not take place in the near future. Therefore, it should be the goal of all Catholic representatives in Washington, which would include Tim Ryan and Nancy Pelosi, to push for tax incentives to mothers who would rather opt to put their child up for adoption, as opposed to abort their innocent child.
Kudos to Bishop George Murray of the Diocese of Youngstown. Continue to call out Congressmen Tim Ryan on this issue!
