Jim Traficant announced last night in Downtown Youngstown that he will run for Congress in 2010, but denied reports from last week that he planned on running as a Democrat. Personally, I believe Traficant would do himself more good running as an Independent. Traficant would stand no chance of winning if he ran as a Republican, although he aligns himself with the GOP on many issues, because too many local voters are blinded by the partisan politics that have destroyed our area for years, so when they see an R they refuse to vote for that individual.

Traficant would get a large portion of the Democrat, Republican, and Independent vote if he ran as an Independent. It would also give Traficant the opportunity to raise money and still be in the race through November, which is no guarantee if he ran in the Democratic primary in May.

The way he has talked about Delphi workers since he has came back from jail, it leads me to believe he will take on Tim Ryan in the 17th District because so many Delphi workers live in that district. And the way the 2010 midterms are looking, Traficant has a great chance to win if he can tap into that conservative, populist anger of the liberals in Washington.

What say you?
