Is the Mahoning Valley better off now than it was five years ago, ten, twenty, thirty, or even forty years ago? The answer most people in the Mahoning Valley would give is NO. During the past forty years, the Democrats have ruled this area politically and have done little to nothing to make this area
a better place. Last night, the Inaugural meeting of the Mahoning County Teenage Republicans [TARS] was held at County Headquarters in Boardman. I was impressed by the young conservatives that took the initiative to bring this club to fruition in such a blue area. I truly believe this group can do great things for the Republican Party in Mahoning County if it remains active for years to come.
Three Keys
I believe there are three keys to make the GOP a viable party in the future:
1) The question I asked above, "Is the Mahoning Valley better off now than it was five years ago, ten, twenty, thirty, or even forty years ago?" Ronald Reagan asked that age old question in 1980 and it helped him to destroy President Jimmy Carter in the 1980 Election. If the GOP can find the right candidates locally to ask that question to Valley citizens, I believe people would be willing to give the GOP a chance.
2) In a heavily Catholic area like the Mahoning Valley, the Republicans can win over voters on the social issues such as gay marriage and abortion. The Mahoning Valley isn't necessarily a liberal area like San Francisco or Boston is; it is an area with many social conservatives. I believe if the GOP candidates can connect to Valley residents on these issues, it can benefit us greatly.
3) Winning over the youth. If the Republicans can win over the youth in our area, we can take back the Valley within a decade. I often ask peers to take Internet political ideology quizzes to see where they stand on the issues. More often than not these peers find themselves to be more conservative or moderate on the issues. These results often times surprise my peers because their parents are Democrats. Winning over these voters is crucial.
The bottom line is the Democratic politicians in this area have done nothing but tax away the hard earned incomes of Valley residents. With Republican politicians, we'll cut SPENDING instead of raising TAXES because that is the best way to be fiscally responsible. The era of the Mahoning County Democratic machine will end soon.... mark my words.
