I would like to commend the fine folks at the Vindicator for publishing a huge front-page article this past Sunday targeting the radical UFCW union in Youngstown. For those of you who do not know, the UFCW union, which represents most Giant Eagle employees in Youngstown, has been picketing outside of Henry Nemenz' IGA and Save-A-Lot Grocery Stores over the past few years. The picketers, being paid by their UFCW union, hold signs that state the Nemenz is anti-union and urging customers to shop elsewhere. The picketing got so extreme at the Nemenz IGA in Hubbard that Henry Nemenz was forced to shut down his store, putting a few dozen people out of work.
I often laugh when I hear people complaining that there are no jobs here; and they wonder why? Put yourself in the shoes of a businessman like Harry Nemenz for a minute. Would you honestly want to start a business in the Mahoning Valley knowing you would have to deal with such radical unions like the UFCW? In my eyes, the extreme actions that some area unions are taking is a royal slap in the face to business-owners like Henry Nemenz that put so much of their time and money into their businesses for the good of the community.
Believe it or not this is not the first Valley business-owner attacked by the union crowd in our area. Just a few years ago, Waffle House franchise owner Doug Miller built a location on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown using non-union workers. Within no time, union picketers were out picketing away because they believed they are 'inferior' to their non-union competition, which is laughable in my eyes! God forbid a business owner use non-union labor! FYI: Doug Miller closed his Austintown location and will not build his projected 25 area locations by 2022.... I wonder why!?
I simply cited two examples that show the radical agendas of some unions in our area. These unions have reached these new lows with their actions because union membership is dwindling drastically before their eyes and they are doing whatever it takes to remain a viable aspect of business in our area. I got some sad news for them, it is not working. They could careless if this area's economy continues to go down the pits, as long as they can collect their union dues, which is a damn shame in my eyes.
Kudos to all the Valley residents that plan on coming out this Saturday to shop at Henry Nemenz' stores in our area to show their appreciation for all the good he has done for the Mahoning Valley. They are true patriots and are doing the right thing. Also a big kudos to the Vindicator for doing the right thing and standing up to the UCFW union! Now it is up to our local politicians to have the guts to stand up and speak out against their radical agendas!
