I am pretty upset the local Republican Party has failed to field quality, competent, and capable candidates to take down the powerful Democratic machine here in the Mahoning Valley. Sure there has been a few over the years, most recently Dick McCarthy, but nine times out of ten, most voters in the area are clueless as to who the Republican candidates are on the ballot. With unemployment as high as it is in our area, it would not be hard for the local Republican Party to grasp a message that will resonate with local voters. The record of the Democratic Party here has been abysmal, yet they are continually elected year after year. If the GOP could find its voice, perhaps we could have an election decided in November, as opposed to March/May in the Democratic primary!
It would be easy for me to call on area voters to vote for the Republicans on the ballot, but until they become familiar with the Republicans running, it is understandable why they vote the way they do. Sooner or later the local Democrats day will come when they will be upset in a race by an Independent or a Republican. When that day occurs, the glass ceiling for Independents and Republicans looking to be elected to public office will be shattered and change will finally be a realistic dream in the Mahoning Valley.
I would like to hear what message you would advise the local Republican Party to use in order to attract voters.

The title speaks to the sad state of affairs in the Mahoning Valley. The unemployment rate in Mahoning County for January 2010 rose to 14.2%, up from 13.4% in December 2009. Despite the terrible economic numbers, local Democrats are still poised to win this November with relative ease over their competition. Nationwide, an unemployment rate that high would constitute a political change, but here in the Mahoning Valley the status quo will remain intact. Local voters will go right down the party line and elect each and every Democrat on the ballot by huge margins. As much as that angers me, fault also resides with the local Republican Party.I am pretty upset the local Republican Party has failed to field quality, competent, and capable candidates to take down the powerful Democratic machine here in the Mahoning Valley. The only way to deal with this in any city is to confront the local leaders face to face and/or by mail, telephone, E-Mail or all of the above. They have to be confronted before they will act.

If you want to blame democrats for the unemployment rate, here is the unemployment rates from congressman John Boehner as of January this year;
Mercer County-9.3%-Not ideal,but solid in 2010 terms. Represents only small area of county.
Butler County-10.9%-Represents half of the county.
Darke County-13.2%
Miami County-13.5%
Preble County-14.1%

Ohio is one of the worst states right now in terms of the economy. Ohio as a state is primarily republican. The Ohio General Assembly has been primarily republican until 2006 when the democrats were voted in. Ohio history of high taxes is tied closer to republicans than it is democrats.
I am merely trying to point out that politics and governments are not 100% responsible for the job market. There are many factors that contribute to the local economy.
