( 2 Votes ) Yesterday, the Vindicator highlighted a number of potential airlines and routes that new Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport Director Daniel Dickten is going after to come to the Mahoning Valley. With the area's strong support of Allegiant Air, coupled with the aggressiveness of Daniel Dickten's efforts to increase air service locally, we may very well see more flights flying in and out of Youngstown in the very near future.

Now some people believe the airport is a cesspool and is a waste of our tax dollars, but I beg to differ. In order for the Mahoning Valley to make a comeback, we will need a strong and vibrant airport to take valley travelers to and from every major city in the United States within 1 stop or less. With daily flights to Detroit, Chicago, and/or Washington DC, that may very well be possible.

The bottom line is this: The Mahoning Valley has been a strong supporter of Allegiant Air in what is now their 4th year here at the airport. If the Mahoning Valley supports another airline, whether it be Delta to Detroit, United to Chicago or Washington DC, or Spirit to Ft. Lauderdale, then we can truly make Youngstown a strong alternative to the hour long drives and the hassle of flying from Cleveland, Pittsburgh, or Akron-Canton.

If you plan on flying to Orlando or Myrtle Beach in the coming months, please consider flying Allegiant Air from Youngstown because I can promise you this:
1. there fares are cheaper than those you can find at CLE, PIT, and CAK;
2. parking rates at YNG are cheaper than what you will find at the other 3; and
3. you will be within 20 minutes of your house when driving home from the airport, an entire hour quicker than CLE (turnpike), PIT (turnpike), and CAK.

I would truly like to commend Daniel Dickten for doing a tremendous job thus far as our new airport director!

I would second the compliment regarding Mr. Dickten and potential new carriers. This level of activity hasn't been seen in recent memeory. Although, we do need to see these air carriers commit to YNG. And of course we need to see valley residents suuport any such venture when they come. And as Mr. Metzinger has posted in the past, we need to see SIGNIFICANT improvements to the terminal facility very soon. I have not heard or seen any comments from Mr. Dickten regarding improvement options, but I am hoping he is pursuing all options to bring YNG up to competetive standards that will attract more potential travelers. Please call Mr. Ryan and others and let them know a competetive facility is vital to the area's growth. Rarely it seems this is talked about. Now is the time.

Bring it home Mr. Dickten! Keep up your momentum and your positive outlook. This area's time has come for major improvements to the facility and service levels at YNG.

It is possible that after air service is expanded then he will deal with the terminal or expand as the air service expands. He might not be able to justify the cost of terminal changes or replacement without significant air service improvement. Your thoughts...................

Good News. I will be meeting with Mr. Dickten this Saturday. You guys have any questions for him that you want answered???

    Great day in the valley!!

I can't wait to see orange jump suits on all of them. With this shake up we maybe able to get some honest people elected. Some that realize the pipe dream at the airport in nothing but a money sucking black hole!

We spend tax dollars for what is basically a CAFARO and ROSS private airport.

    Metz,
I have full confidence in you. After all the articles you have written, it's obvious you have a great feel for the pulse and needs of YNG. Jetway(s), baggage claim expansion, lighting (interior and exterior), expansion of seating and the terminal in general, upgrade to restrooms, etc. Obviously the right carriers are huge for success. If they do attract carriers, what kind of budget is there for advertising? Does Mr. Dickten believe that common air travlers will be turned away by smaller turbo prop models and may perceive them as less comfortable and not as safe? I personally know people who are..even if that is misguided on the safety side.

I am curious if Mr. Dickten is aware of the success of last year's air show. The Y'town Air Force base is huge. I give credit to Cong. Ryan for focusing efforts from his appropriation committee assignment to enhance and support it. The turnout was very strong and is proof that people of the Valley will turn out for good attractions. I think that was a positive, and by extension I believe the right carriers will do the same.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the last time we had air service to Chicago, we had not opened Route 711. That also has been widely used and should help YNG's cause.

Good to hear you have a meeting Metz and I am anxious to hear your report. Continued success!

The meeting went well. I won't go into too much detail about what was discussed, but I left optimistic about the future of the facility.

To all the airport supporters out there, I would like to get your email addresses to discuss forming an airport support group. I understand a similar group was formed awhile ago, but I am unaware of it so I figure we start from scratch.

Just shoot me an email: ytownmetz@gmail.com and we will go from there.

    Thanks!

Youngstown airport supporters: glad to see the progress report on things. Mr. Dickten sounds like a winner and similar to Bob O Brien here in Rockford.

Any of the air service proposals mentioned sound like possibilities for YNG. Frankly, I would like to see Trans States, Vision, and Spirit look at similar service for Rockford like that considered for YNG.

Would Direct Air make any sense for you folks ?
They just added to their service here with seasonal flights to West Palm Beach.
