will there ever be two G4 (Allegiant) a/c in at once, or are the MYR and MCO flights on different days? Glad you're back to blogging on YNG again, give me something interesting to read about!

One of my main complaints about the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is the terminal. With the exception of the gate/holding area, the rest of the terminal seems to be unchanged from the 1960s and 1970s and is in need of some major repairs. Here are a few pictures (click to enlarge) I took of the terminal when I flew out of there in late July 2009:
As you can see in the top row and in the bottom row, the airport is in dire need of some renovations. It could use some new floors, a better floor-plan, new lighting, a new baggage claim, and perhaps some skylight windows to permeate that part of the terminal. The pictures in the middle are in the gate/holding area and as you can see, it is pretty nice in there, however I have two complains. First off, it is too small. We had a sold out flight and there was not enough seats in there for all 150 passengers to sit on. If this airport is serious about expanding its flight offerings to the Mahoning Valley, this section of the terminal could use some more seats and/or an expansion. Secondly, there are no bathrooms in this secure part of the terminal. What that means you have to leave this area of the terminal, go to the bathroom, and go through security again just to "relieve" yourself. Whoever designed this expanded area did a nice job with the look and feel of it, but it is way too small and is badly in need of some restrooms.
From what I have been able to figure, this expansion took place around 2000-2001 before 9/11, so that is the most logical reason why they did not include restrooms in this part of the terminal. Secondly, the airport was not serviced by large jets back then; we were accustomed to commuter airlines that did not require 150+ seats. However, with the expanded offering of Allegiant Air flights to Myrtle Beach, ironically on the same time of day as the Orlando flights, changes will need to be made in order to service all these passengers. Having one jet-bridge/jet-way made sense in 2000, but not in 2010. The airport should consider an investment in a second jet-bridge/jet-way to adequately service all passengers.
FYI: I am no expert on the airport, so this is just me speaking from first hand experience. If the airport is serious about becoming an airport serviced by a number of airlines, then the changes I mentioned above need addressed badly. Although I was 100% against the stimulus, a project like this would make perfect sense considering the original terminal was constructed through funding from the Works Progress Administration. Whoever becomes the new airport director needs to consider contacting our Congressmen and Senators about getting funding to get this airport fixed up. Like they say, "if you build it, they will come."

I just wanted to apologize for not posting anything in the past week, I really have nothing to talk about. I am waiting to hear something on this reconciliation vote on health care, but until this bill actually passes the House, I do not have much to say. Locally there hasn't been all that much to talk about either, so I decided to do yet another article on the airport until I have some "news" to discuss. One of my main complaints about the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is the terminal. The plane on Thursday and Sunday goes from MCO-YNG and then from YNG-MYR. Before that flight to MYR lands, another plane will take off from MYR-YNG, and then from YNG-MCO.
So two flights within about 3-4 hours of each other on those days. Still good for business at the airport.

I think if they can get some significant additional air service these things would take place.

That will be a high priority if significant additional air service becomes a reality.
Quote:If the airport is serious about becoming an airport serviced by a number of airlines, then the changes I mentioned above need addressed badly.
Again, if the Allegiant service is firmly supported and if some legacy scheduled service were to happen I think the airport would have to get serious on these issues through state and federal funding. Not until then will they be motivated.
Quote:Whoever becomes the new airport director
This will be the key to all your concerns. It will take a firmly motivated Airport Director to reach for whatever he or she needs to achieve these goals regarding the terminal and serious air service. In the mean time these concerns could be addressed by attending the airport board meetings and voice your ideas. However I am sure they would reply with some of what I have stated here. Simply put when there is some serious air service at YNG beyond the thin Allegiant service they will look at the terminal improvements.

|64.12.117.xxx |2010-03-11 19:34:41 KYNGTownWhat is the timetable for the new hiring? Does the board have any sense of urgency with regard to the needs addressed here? It's ironic that back in the day the Hanni's were beating the drum on a local radio talk show (hosted by one of them) of the need to close the "black hole"!! Of course it was politically motivated. They were trying their best to discredit David Engler and Michael Morley who were making attempts at the time to get the "air field" idea established. I believe at the time they were courting FED EX and others to look at YNG for possible expansion.
Politics is such an ugly game. I hope the crew on this board is there for the proper reason. I personally don't care about one's political axe to grind. This area needs and deserves a better facility. I hope they get this hire right!

|65.185.90.xxx |2010-05-05 21:13:11 KYNGTownSo, when can we expect the new director to start turning things around at YNG? I'm hoping sooner rather than later!

|64.12.112.xxx |2010-03-17 18:37:15 KYNGTownI see Rick McQueen, the CEO at CAK, is quoted as saying they will have their "dream airfield" after the 8200 ft $16.625 million runway is completed. Congressmen Ryan and Boccieri are quoted as supporters of this project (as they should).
How is it we don't have anything significant pending for construction at YNG considering the Obama bank truck has been on the road for a while delivering monies for numerous projects?
Somebody grab the jumper cables already! There ia a LOT to jump start at YNG! Let's get some use out of our 9000+ ft runway. Expansion and upgrades please.

|205.188.117.xxx |2010-03-06 12:03:13 KYNGtownThis was commented about by me on the former site, but again the things outlined are all true and in order for this airport to move forward, these changes must occur! Maybe with the recent resurgence in investment in the valley, the powers that be will acknowledge the need and viability of an attractive airport. This facility, if improved, will attract airlines and travelers. C'mon we deserve it. It is time!

|74.235.183.xxx |2010-03-06 15:56:38 DrewSeems the additional service has created a need for additional ramp personnel:

This was posted yesterday, and closes 4/4. Obviously I would not be posting it here if I wanted it for myself, which I would, but since it requires a move, I would need it to be more than part-time. This sounds like a great opportunity for anyone in the valley looking to start their career in commercial aviation!
